Class Conflict
You may wish to look at protest art from other countries to get you started. http://culturalpolitics.net/social_movements/art |
In this lesson you are going to evaluate and analyse the societal instability and class conflict that was evident in pre revolutionary Russia.
Firstly, read the short stories by Anton Chekov and Leo Tolstoy that illustrate the class conflict of pre-revolutionary Russia. As you are reading, go beyond the surface of the stories to get to the heart of the problems that Russia was facing at this time. Decipher the social and political messages that Chekov and Tolstoy were trying to convey. Why did they choose these settings? What classes do the individual characters represent? What are the motivations, (obvious and hidden) of the characters in the stories? Readings ‘How Much Land Does a Man Need’?, by Leo Tolstoy. http://www.online-literature.com/tolstoy/2738/ 'The House with the Mezzanine’, by Anton Chekov. http://www.readbookonline.net/readOnLine/17916/ Place yourself in the shoes of the characters in the stories. How do you think they feel? What do you think they are unhappy about? What do you think they want to change? Why do you think they want change? With these things in mind, you are now to design a protest poster that conveys the feelings of the social classes depicted in the above stories. The finished posters will then be peer evaluated and analysed. |
